File 009: The Neural Cost
The Neural Cost
The Aeon Cafe sat in the heart of the Techno District, a perfect reflection of the neighborhood: sleek, sterile, and blindingly expensive. The district was home to the city's cutting-edge technology firms and research institutions, serving as a hub of innovation and creativity
Inside, in a secluded booth bathed in ambient blue light, Terrance Reid was sweating through his tailored suit.
Terrance glanced nervously at the cafe entrance, then slid a small, silver data-drive across the polished table. It stopped an inch from the manicured fingers of the man sitting opposite him.
Arjun didn't reach for the drive. He simply took a slow sip of his synthetic espresso, his dark eyes calmly evaluating the terrified man before him.
"Relax, Terrance," Arjun noted, his voice smooth and untroubled. "We are in the Techno District. The streets are clean here."
"The streets are a lie," Terrance hissed, leaning in so close his breath fogged the table. "NeuroSolutions Corporation emerges as a leader in neural interface technology, pioneering groundbreaking innovations in brain-computer interfaces and neural implants
Arjun finally placed his cup down. "And what does the data show?"
"A black site," Terrance whispered, his eyes darting to a pair of corporate suits walking past their booth. "Deep beneath the grid. They aren't just developing neural interface technology for healthcare
Terrance tapped the silver drive. "The decryption keys for the site's mainframe are on that drive. Ten million credits, Arjun. That was the deal. I get the credits, and I get on the next maglev out of Nexopolis before they realize the files are missing."
Arjun picked up the drive. He turned it over in his hand, the ambient light catching the edge of the metal.
"It is a fascinating piece of leverage, Terrance," Arjun said softly. "But there is a fundamental flaw in your logic."
Terrance frowned, a cold knot tightening in his stomach. "What flaw?"
"You assumed NeuroSolutions didn't already know it was missing."
Before Terrance could push back from the table, the ambient blue lights of the Aeon Cafe flickered and died. The kinetic-glass windows surrounding their booth instantly polarized, turning pitch black.
The heavy thud of magnetic boots echoed over the cafe's soft jazz music. Four towering figures materialized from the sudden gloom. They wore the matte-black, seamless tactical armor of elite corporate enforcers, their faces entirely obscured by opaque, multi-spectrum helmets. They moved with absolute, silent precision.
Terrance lunged from the booth, scrambling for the exit.
He didn't make it two steps. A heavy, armored gauntlet clamped around the back of his neck, lifting him effortlessly off the ground. The enforcer slammed him face-first onto the polished plasteel table. The impact drove the air from his lungs.
Arjun didn't flinch. He remained seated, calmly finishing his espresso as the enforcers pinned Terrance down.
"Arjun!" Terrance choked out, struggling against the crushing weight of the armor. "You set me up! They'll kill us both!"
"They won't kill me, Terrance," Arjun replied, standing up and brushing a speck of dust from his lapel. He handed the data-drive directly to the lead enforcer. "I am simply an independent auditor. Identifying leaks is my specialty."
The lead enforcer secured the drive into a tactical pouch. He looked down at Terrance, his voice a digitized, emotionless drone.
"Terrance Reid. You are in violation of your corporate non-disclosure agreement."
"Just put a bullet in me," Terrance gasped, tasting blood on his lip.
The enforcer leaned in close, the cold metal of his helmet pressing against Terrance's cheek.
"NeuroSolutions does not waste raw materials, Mr. Reid. A bullet destroys the cerebral cortex. You possess an intimate, unauthorized knowledge of our clandestine neural mapping initiatives. The CEO feels it is only fitting that you experience the technology firsthand."
The enforcer produced a heavy, silver syringe loaded with a thick, glowing blue fluid.
"We are taking you to the black site," the enforcer whispered. "We are going to map your mind, Terrance. And when we are finished, you won't even remember how to scream."
The enforcer plunged the syringe into Terrance's neck. The world instantly dissolved into a silent, terrifying darkness.
